Dallas Stars forward Wyatt Johnston sent a strong message by taking responsibility after losing to the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.

Johnston, 22, came to the defense of goalie Jake Oettinger after a reporter mentioned that it is not very common for him to get pulled.

“We obviously weren’t good enough for him in the first, and I mean, he’s such an important part of our team, and he’s such an amazing goalie,” Johnston said after the game against the Devils.

“We know it’s not fun to see our goalie get pulled, and that’s on us to do a better job in front of him,” he added.

Johnston calls for focus on ‘process’ as Stars win just one of last five

Johnston also answered what the key is for him heading into the next games, considering they have won only one of their last five matches. The young forward made it clear that despite the rough stretch, they remain a very difficult team for opponents.

“I think just focusing on the process. Obviously, you can talk about it and, you know, want to do it, but it’s kind of on us to do it. Obviously, you’re in different situations against different teams every night, but just kind of getting back to that process and that style that we know we can play and we know is so hard to play against.”

Jason Robertson also spoke to the media after the game and offered praise for Johnston, particularly for his role on the power play.

“I think the thing with Johnny is it’s not just from one area. It’s all over the ice. So, he just finds a way to get open and get a shot off, even though it was a lucky break,” he said.

“I mean, right place at the right time. He’s a critical part of our power play. It’s been like that all season long. And it’s gonna be important leading up to the playoffs.”
