Brady Tkachuk gave Travis Green’s Senators a captain’s moment in Detroit, and it had nothing to do with a hit or a goal.
During Ottawa’s game against the Red Wings, Tkachuk made a point of acknowledging longtime Detroit broadcaster Mickey Redmond. I
t was a small gesture, but inside a rivalry game, it landed in a big way.
That’s what made it stand out. Players are wired to stay locked into the next shift, the next faceoff, the next scrum around the crease.
Tkachuk still found time to recognize a franchise icon. In a building like Little Caesars Arena, that kind of respect doesn’t get missed.
Redmond had recently returned after cervical spine fusion surgery tied to chronic neck issues. For Detroit fans, seeing him back already meant plenty before puck drop.
Then Tkachuk added another layer to the night. He didn’t have to do it, and that’s exactly why people noticed.
Ottawa also wasn’t rolling into Detroit at full strength.
The Senators were missing Thomas Chabot and Jake Sanderson, which only raised the pressure on Green’s group in a road game with real stakes.
A captain’s gesture turned into a bigger night
The result made the sequence even louder.
Ottawa came away with a massive win, and the two points pushed the Senators into the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
That jump mattered because it moved Ottawa past both Detroit and the New York Islanders. One respectful moment quickly became part of a much bigger story.
And that’s where Tkachuk’s leadership shows up.
He plays with edge every night, but this was the other side of his game.
Captains get measured by more than shots and special teams usage in March. They get measured by how they carry themselves when the building is hot and the standings are tight.
Tkachuk gave Ottawa both in Detroit. He helped his team grab a huge result, and he showed respect to a Red Wings voice who means a lot to that city.
Those are the moments fans remember. Not just the scoreboard, but the way a player handles the stage when the game gives him a chance to say something without saying much at all.
