The Edmonton Oilers are one win away from the Stanley Cup Final, again. And again, it could be at the expense of the Dallas Stars. Edmonton continues to be a series favorite, but the spread is leaning toward Dallas at home as they hope to stave off elimination.

Oilers at Stars Game 5

Oilers lead series 3-1

Series odds: Oilers -1100, Stars +700

The Oilers’ offense and defense have powered them through their last three wins, outscoring Dallas 13-2. However, they’ll have to play on without Zach Hyman, who was injured in Game 4 and is likely to miss the rest of the playoffs after surgery Wednesday.

Edmonton’s trio featuring Hyman, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Connor McDavid operated at a 61.67 Corsi rating and a 1.89 expected goals rate according to Natural Stat Trick, both team highs. Fortunately, the Oilers’ depth scoring remains a plus. Edmonton has had 11 different goal scorers through four games played so far, including Hyman. Oh, and Stuart Skinner seems to be comfortable in his groove with three consecutive wins and five wins in his last six starts.

If the Stars want to keep their Cup ambitions alive, it means accomplishing something they’ve never done in their team history: overcome a 3-1 series deficit. Dallas is 0-16 all-time when trying to overcome being down 3-1. The closest they came was in 2007 against the Vancouver Canucks. The Stars shutout the Canucks in Game 5 and 6 before the floodgates opened in Game 7.

We’ve focused enough on the Stars’ scoring woes (Those didn’t change in Game 4 despite Jason Robertson’s goal). And it has put a stress on Jake Oettinger, who has an .863 save percentage in his last three games.
