The Detroit Red Wings anticipated having to call up a goaltender after their regular backup became unavailable.

Cam Talbot missed practice ahead of the Wings’ next game, Friday, March 27, at the Buffalo Sabres, because of an undisclosed injury.

“I don’t know if he tweaked something yesterday, but he would be day-to-day,” coach Todd McLellan said after Thursday’s practice. “We think it’s minor, but it’s minor enough that he didn’t skate today. We’ll have to figure that part out. We’ll likely have to call up a goaltender. We’ll have to talk about it. We have to deal with Talbot a little bit right now. He was getting some things looked at this morning, so it’s all happened fast.”

Sebastian Cossa, the Wings’ first-round pick (No. 15 overall) in 2021, was called up when the Wings needed help after starter John Gibson was injured in early March, but did not appear in a game.

The Grand Rapids Griffins were set to play Thursday in Cleveland, so either Cossa or Michal Postava project to be recalled and join the Wings in Buffalo. Gibson projects to make his 10th consecutive start and could be called upon to play back-to-back nights with the team hosting the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.

Goaltending coach Michael Leighton put on the pads to man one of the nets in practice.

“He was pretty good out there,” McLellan said, smiling. “He didn’t do much for the shooters’ confidence, but hopefully he’s not on the medical table. I did see him do the splits, I think.”
