KANATA, Ontario — With injuries mounting, the Pittsburgh Penguins made a pair of recalls Thursday morning, but have not yet recalled Rutger McGroarty as their lineup shrinks.

Thursday, the Penguins recalled Avery Hayes and Joona Koppanen from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. No corresponding moves are required as the NHL 23-man roster rule does not apply after the NHL trade deadline.

The recalls became necessary when the team deemed both Evgeni Malkin and Anthony Mantha out day-to-day, Malkin on Tuesday and Mantha on Wednesday. It should be noted that Mantha took the morning skate Thursday.

In his NHL debut in February, Avery Hayes, 23, scored a pair of goals against the Buffalo Sabres, but did not score in his next 10 games.

Koppanen, 28, has played 10 NHL games this season and had registered one assist.
