Cam Talbot’s injury prompted the Detroit Red Wings to call up Grand Rapids Griffins goalie Michael Postava on an emergency basis Thursday night

Although Sebastian Cossa is the higher ranked prospect, Postava, 23, has been sharper lately. In 21 games this season, he owns a 1.86 goals-against average and 13-6 record. He has yielded 16 goals in his past eight games.

The Red Wings signed him as a UFA last summer after he helped Brno Kometa win the Czechia league championship.

Postava posted a .920 save percentage in Czechia last season and is at .932 for Grand Rapids this season.

Coach Todd McLellan has not said what his weekend goaltending plans are. NHL coaches generally like to use two goalies in back-to-back games like the Red Wings face with a road game against the Buffalo Sabres Friday and a home game against the Philadelphia Flyers Saturday.

But given the Red Wings ongoing playoff battle, McLellan may have planned on using John Gibson in both games even if Talbot was healthy. The call-up is about making sure there is a qualified backup in the event Gibson is injured before. or during, Friday’s game.

Cossa, impressively sharp earlier in the season, has given up 14 goals in his past three Griffins games. On Thursday, the Griffins called up Carter Gylander (191st, 2019) from the Toledo Walleye. Griffins coach Dan Watson played him in a division-clinching 5-2 win against the Cleveland Monsters. Gylander made 28 saves.
