The Edmonton Oilers are in the homestretch of a very unimpressive regular season, yet they’re on track to secure home ice in the first round. With so many narratives and up-and-down play, this season has been a weird one for the Oilers, and thankfully they’ve been playing much better hockey as of late.

On the ice, the ship appears to be righting. Off the ice, an intriguing report just dropped by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman indicates that Oilers Assistant General Manager Bill Scott is on the shortlist to fill the open General Manager role with the Nashville Predators.

Who is Bill Scott?

Well, he’s this guy:

Scott doesn’t have a playing history at a high level that we can find, but has been involved in hockey operations for the better part of the last 25 years.

A graduate of Michigan State University, Scott has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and worked with the men’s hockey team while in school. His debut into professional hockey management was with the ECHL where he served as the Manager of Hockey Operations for three seasons.

He then served as the Director of Hockey Operations with the American Hockey League for four seasons. From the Oilers website: “His duties included creation of league schedule, assisting in determining player fines and suspensions, supervising regular season and playoff games, and interpreting by-laws as well as the Collective Bargaining Agreement for member teams.”

Scott has been involved with the Oilers organization since 2010.

He was the GM of the Oilers’ AHL affiliate the Oklahoma City Barons from 2010-2014, and was promoted to the Oilers as an AGM the following two seasons. He then assumed the role of Director of Hockey Operations for the Oilers from 2016-2022, along with serving as the GM of the Bakersfield Condors for two seasons from 2015-2017. He then became an AGM of the Oilers again in 2022, a role he currently holds.

From the Oilers website again, his role with the team currently includes: “player and staff contract negotiations, scheduling, salary arbitration, salary cap management and all day to day administrative duties. He is also the club’s liaison to the NHL regarding matters pertaining to the Collective Bargaining Agreement.”

Scott has a long history in hockey operations, mostly in the AHL, but has been part of the Oilers management team for over 15 years.

This isn’t a name we’ve heard floating around GM discussions in the past, but it’s a nod to the great work he does with the Oilers.
