The Edmonton Oilers are beginning to look like a playoff-ready team at the right time of the NHL season. Their recent 4-3 overtime win over the Vegas Golden Knights marked another night where their shift in approach and urgency was clear.
The Oilers are now engaging in a physical game, as we saw in the late first-period brawl in which newly acquired forward Jason Dickinson and defenseman Darnell Nurse took part.

Speaking to the media after the game, head coach Kris Knoblauch said the team is now playing with more detail and focus. He noted that players are treating each contest with playoff intensity, and that mindset has started to reflect in results.

“We’re looking more like we’re playing a playoff game, like things matter, attention to detail, and we’re simplifying our game,” Knoblauch said. “And yeah, it’s nice to see. And obviously, the games are so important right now that everyone seems like they’re dialed in and they know the urgency to play right.”
In the game, Evan Bouchard, who is leading the league in points (84) among defensemen, scored the overtime winner. This play took place after a penalty kill, underlining Edmonton’s improved defensive effort. The team answered every challenge despite giving up the lead three times, a sign of growing resilience.

“It was nice that we were able to have the lead most of the night,” Knoblauch said. “You know, I look at it as, unfortunately, we gave up the lead three times, but you know that we didn’t ever give up two in a row. And then when they had opportunities to go ahead, especially on the penalty kill, we were able to find an answer with some defensive play.”
Captain Connor McDavid led from the front with a goal and two assists. He also reached 800 career assists in just 785 games, trailing only Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux in speed to the mark. McDavid now has 121 points this season (his 9th 100-point season) and remains the driving force behind the offense.
Depth scoring and improved defense are helping the Oilers
The Oilers also saw contributions from younger players, with rookie Matt Savoie continuing his strong run on the top line. So now, depth scoring has started to support the star core, another key factor for playoff success.

Edmonton currently holds second place in the Pacific Division with a 36-28-9 record. They have opened a small gap over Vegas, but still trail the Anaheim Ducks at the top.
Earlier, the Oilers struggled with consistency this season, especially defensively. However, recent performances suggest a shift toward a tighter, more disciplined style. If that continues, the Oilers could enter the playoffs with momentum and a more complete game.
