The Toronto Blue Jays enter the 2026 MLB season facing a situation similar to what the Toronto Maple Leafs experienced after losing Mitch Marner. The challenge is simple but difficult: how do you replace a star’s production without disrupting the entire system?

Toronto comes off a strong 2025 campaign, winning the AL East and reaching the World Series. Led by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette, the team fell just short against the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games. However, the offseason changed everything as Bichette signed with the New York Mets.

Bichette’s departure created a gap similar to Marner’s exit in Toronto hockey circles. The Leafs struggled to replace Marner’s all-around impact, and early signs suggest the Blue Jays may face the same issue with Bichette.

On TSN’s “First Up,” Carlo Colaiacovo compared the situations directly. He questioned whether one player can replace Bichette or if the responsibility must be shared.

“Almost the Marner situation in Blue Jays land that the Leafs went through is how do you replace a guy?” Colaiacovo questioned.

“Are you looking at one individual to replace that, and if it is that Okamoto? Or are you asking a collective of guys? To replace his production. Maybe that collective of guys is Ernie Clement, Addison Barger, who are gonna be full-time guys right now, and Okamoto.”

Toronto is expected to rely on a mix of internal options like Ernie Clement and Addison Barger, along with newcomer Munetaka Okamoto. While Okamoto brings power potential, questions remain about how his success in Japan will translate to MLB.

Aaron Korolnek added that Guerrero could elevate his numbers to help offset the loss.

“Well, how about Vlad again? Right, he had 23 home runs last year,” Korolnek said. “Why can’t he hit 35 and be part of that as well?”

Responding to which Colaiacovo said, “Totally agree, like you we talked about it, Steve Phillips and even our boy Keegan Matheson suggest that Vlad is a serious contender for the MVP, and if Vlad does elevate his game to that level, then yeah, the loss of Bo Bichette doesn’t become that impactful.”

Blue Jays have already competed without Bo Bichette

Last season, the Blue Jays did show that they can compete without Bichette. He missed the final stretch of last season before returning in the World Series, where his late home run nearly changed the outcome.

Still, replacing his consistent hitting and presence is not easy. Like the Maple Leafs, the Blue Jays must find balance rather than depend on a single replacement.

“I think it is unfair to look at Okamoto and say, ‘Yeah, he’s gonna replace Bo Bichette,’” Korolnek said about Okamoto being seen as that candidate.

So, clearly, if Guerrero reaches MVP level and the supporting cast steps up, the Blue Jays can stay competitive. If not, they risk following a familiar path of unmet expectations.
