A year after getting a taste of the NCAA Frozen Four, Penn State is back in the tournament with hopes of getting back to the grand stage of the college hockey world. The Nittany Lions ended the regular season on a bit of a cold streak but Gavin McKenna and Penn State are ready to embrace a challenging path to Las Vegas beginning with Friday night’s first-round matchup with a college hockey powerhouse. Penn State and Minnesota Duluth meet for the first time and will battle for a spot in the Albany regional final.
While Penn State may be coming off its first Frozen Four in program history a season ago, Minnesota Duluth is looking to capture its fourth national title in school history. The Bulldogs are led by sophomore Max Plante, who has been riding a bit of a hot streak. He and McKenna were finalists for the Hobey Award.
Penn State coach Guy Gadowsky is a little familiar with the Bulldogs. Gadowsky coached Minnesota Duluth center Zam Plante and goalie Adam Gajan for the U.S. team in the 2025 Spengler Cup.
