Add Mikael Backlund to the list of players who have swapped signed jerseys with Alex Ovechkin this season.
The Calgary Flames revealed the moment happened on their Instagram, teasing an episode of their behind-the-scenes documentary, The Chase.
The swap occurred on March 9 after the Capitals defeated the Flames 7-3 at Capital One Arena. Backlund, the Flames’ captain, entered a backroom where Ovechkin was waiting for him.
After the swap was complete, the Swedish forward did some pseudo-journalism, attempting to find out whether Ovechkin was returning for a 22nd season at age 41.
Mikael Backlund: Good luck the rest of the way. You going to come back for another one, or…?
Alex Ovechkin: We’ll see.
Mikael Backlund: You said maybe. Well, it was a pleasure.
Alex Ovechkin: Alright, see you.
Backlund is the latest player to swap jerseys with Ovechkin, who has accumulated quite a memorabilia haul this season. Ovechkin has added jerseys from Los Angeles Kings forward Anze Kopitar, Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin, Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk, Florida Panthers forward Brad Marchand, and Team Canada superstar Marie-Philip Poulin.
Ovechkin recently appeared to grab two signed sticks from the Hughes brothers, Jack and Luke, after a Capitals-Devils game on March 20. Jack scored the golden goal for Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
