The Ottawa Senators will welcome the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Canadian Tire Center on Thursday night for an Eastern Conference matchup that may have playoff implications on the line as the regular season enters its final stretch. The Senators will have a bit of work to do in order to move into a playoff position as the team currently sits in fifth place in the standings with a total of 85 points collected from a record of 38-24-9. The Penguins bring a record of 35-20-16 into Thursday night’s game for a total of 86 points and they only trail the second place Blue Jackets by one point. Pittsburgh, however, has lost two games in a row and will need to get out of that rut in order to close the ten-point gap with the leading Hurricanes.

By the end of the second period, the Penguins trailed 5-1. Rickard Rakell closed the gap slightly with a goal in the final eight minutes of play, but Colorado put one more in before the end of the third. Artūrs Šilovs made 24 saves between the pipes for the Penguins.

The Senators have now won four games in a row with the last being a narrow 3-2 victory over the Red Wings in Detroit on Tuesday. Brady Tkachuk opened the scoring for Ottawa with less than three to play in the first, giving his team a 1-0 lead to take into the locker room. Carter Yakemchuk extended that lead halfway through the second period before Lars Eller scored minutes later. The Red Wings were able to bring the game within one, but strong defense and goaltending by Linus Ullmark allowed the team to hold on. Ullmark finished the game with 32 saves on the night.

The Penguins and Senators last met in early February and Ottawa skated away with a 3-2 win in Pittsburgh. Thursday night’s game will be the last between the two teams in regular season play.
