Takeaways

Trevor Zegras overtime hero

The Flyers needed someone big to step up after the game went to overtime, and Trevor Zegras answered that call. The 25-year-old center wristed the game-winning goal five-hole past Stars goalie Casey DeSmith and threw his arms up to the roar of the crowd as his teammates mobbed him.

The overtime goal was Zegras’ 24th goal on the season – his new career high. He is now up to 60 points in 74 games, and has been an impact player the Flyers can count on in the biggest moments.

Travis Konecny showed up in a big game

Travis Konecny has been notorious in online circles for not showing up in the big games. Well, he proved all those doubters wrong and scored a huge power play goal to put the Flyers up 1-0.

The 29-year-old forward led all Flyers with a 0.789 expected goals percentage and led the team with five shots on goal. Konecny was playing confidently, and that’s the type of Travis Konecny this team is going to need moving forward if they are going to claw their way into the playoffs.

Power play giveth, power play taketh away

The Flyers’ power play was a bit of a double-edged sword tonight—giving them one goal, but also costing them one. On the positive side, it’s clearly starting to find a rhythm, with more confidence and cleaner execution in recent games. They’ve now scored a power-play goal in back-to-back outings, and Matvei Michkov and Travis Konecny have been right at the center of that success.

At the same time, it wasn’t perfect. The unit also allowed a goal against, showing there’s still some work to do. It’s slight progress, but not without its flaws — which is why the power play giveth, and the power play taketh away.

Sam Ersson – the unsung hero

Samuel Ersson. What a game from the 26-year-old goaltender. Ersson finished the night with a .944 save percentage and is now 5-0 since coming back from the Olympic break. Now this doesn’t completely erase how poorly he played in January and February, but it’s a positive for the Flyers that Ersson is looking like – not just a competent backup – but a solid backup.

Ersson came up huge tonight in multiple instances, most notably with under three minutes left when Trevor Zegras took a tripping penalty. Ersson and the penalty kill stepped up and killed off the Stars’ power play, where Ersson made the save of the night – if not the save of the season.

He slid post to post to rob Wyatt Johnston of what would have been the go-ahead goal for the Stars. It left many Flyers fans with their jaws on the floor. The save not only gave the Flyers hope, but it was also the reason they were able to capture two points.

PLAYOFFS?

With this win, the Flyers’ odds of making the playoffs have jumped to 26% according to MoneyPuck.com. The Flyers will still have a lot of work to do, but with games upcoming against the Washington Capitals, Detroit Red Wings, New York Islanders, and Boston Bruins, they can control their own destiny.

The Flyers got no help around the league tonight as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3-1, and the Bruins and Columbus Blue Jackets went to overtime, with the Blue Jackets inevitably losing 4-3.

Tomorrow night, the Flyers will be scoreboard watching as the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are two points ahead of the Flyers, take on the Islanders, who are three points ahead of the Flyers. The Penguins have been faltering late, so an Islanders win in regulation would be in the Flyers’ best interest.

Porter Martone in the building

Flyers 2025 sixth overall pick, Porter Martone, was at Xfinity Mobile Arena tonight, and according to general manager Danny Briere, he could make his NHL debut as early as this Tuesday against the Washington Capitals. Brière said the Flyers are excited to get him in with the team down the stretch, especially after the growth he showed this season at Michigan State University – scoring 50 points in 36 games in his freshman season.

At the same time, the Flyers and Briere aren’t expecting Martone to come in and save their playoff push. The focus is just getting him experience in meaningful games and letting him adjust to the NHL, while adding another promising young piece to the group.

Look who it is! 👋
