Former Dallas Stars coach Peter DeBoer has spent the past months away from the NHL bench, but his focus has not shifted.

The experienced coach used this period to reset, spend time with family, and stay connected to the game. His recent role with Team Canada at the Winter Olympics also kept him close to high-level competition.

Now, DeBoer made it clear he is ready for the next opportunity. Speaking to NHL.com, he said he understands how rare NHL coaching jobs are. At the same time, he expressed a strong belief in his ability to deliver results.

“All I can say is, I’m ready,” DeBoer said. “There are only 32 jobs in the NHL, and it’s a privilege to have one of them. I’m humble enough to know that. Having said that, I have a lot of confidence in my track record of coming in and having success in different places. And I’m especially proud of my ability in the playoffs to have teams move forward.”

DeBoer’s recent stint with Dallas highlights that track record. He guided the Stars to three straight Western Conference Finals from 2023 to 2025. Despite that consistency, the team failed to reach the Stanley Cup Final, leading to his dismissal in June 2025. Management felt a new direction was needed after another deep but incomplete playoff run.

Even after his exit, interest around the league remained active. DeBoer revealed that multiple teams reached out over the past nine months. While he avoided naming franchises, he admitted that at least one situation came close to materializing. Still, he believes the timing was not right and accepted the break as part of the process.

“I think there was at least one situation that was really close that was interesting,” DeBoer said. “But as I’ve told you before, the best way to describe it is that I think this year I was exactly where I was meant to be, for a lot of different reasons.”

DeBoer led teams like the New Jersey Devils and San Jose Sharks to the Stanley Cup Final in earlier roles. He also had a strong spell with the Vegas Golden Knights, continuing his reputation for quick impact.

Looking ahead, several teams could enter the market for a proven coach. Franchises under pressure to contend may value DeBoer’s playoff experience and structured approach.

For now, DeBoer waits. But when the next call comes, he believes he will be prepared to step in and make an immediate difference once again.
