However they are in a close battle for the top spot in the Atlantic Division, tied in points with the Tampa Bay Lightning, who have a game in hand.

That race got tighter when the Sabres had a three-game losing streak last week – although two of the losses were in overtime. They did kick that streak and rebound on Saturday though with a 3-2 shootout win over the Seattle Kraken.
Meanwhile, the Sabres are far from clinching a spot. They enter Tuesday in playoff position in the third spot in the Metropolitan Division with 89 points, but have the Columbus Blue Jackets just one point back with a game in hand. The Blue Jackets currently hold the final Wild Card spot, with the Ottawa Senators currently the first team out with 86 points and two games in hand on the Isles.
This is the second-half of a back-to-back for the Islanders, who are coming off a loss. They fell 8-3 to the Pittsburgh Penguins at home on Monday night, to finish a five-game homestand 3-2-0.
Tuesday night’s game is the third meeting of the year between the Sabres and Islanders. Buffalo won the first two, one in a shootout and one in regulation.
