A group of hikers caused an urgent response from New York Forest Rangers in Essex County over the weekend after eating hallucinogenic mushrooms.The New York Department of Environmental Conservation said it received several calls from the group on Saturday morning, with hikers reporting that a member of their party had died while climbing Cascade Mountain in Keene.The Cascade Mountain steward was able to find the group and said they were in an “altered mental state” but that no one was dead.Forest rangers later learned the group had eaten mushrooms before making those calls.Rangers escorted two of the hikers off the mountain to an ambulance. A third hiker was helped back to their campsite.
