The Detroit Red Wings signed Michigan State goalie and South Lyon native Trey Augustine to a three-year, entry-level deal that was announced on Tuesday.
Augustine’s junior season came to an end with the Spartans’ 4-3 overtime loss Saturday evening to Wisconsin. The 21-year-old shot stopper denied 34 shots in the loss, which followed up his 41-save effort, a season high, in MSU’s first-round game against UConn.
That clears Augustine to report to the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, on an amateur tryout for the remainder of this season.
Viewed as potentially the future between the sticks for the club (along with 2021 first-round selection Sebastian Cossa), the Red Wings made Augustine the 43rd overall pick of the 2023 NHL Draft. Praised for his agility in the crease, Augustine was ranked No. 3 on The Athletic’s list of drafted NHL goalie prospects, five spots ahead of Cossa. Cossa has appeared in 36 games for the Griffins this season, amassing a 0.918 save percentage with a handful of shutouts.
The back-to-back Big Ten Goaltender of the Year Award winner finished his final season in East Lansing with a 2.11 goals-against average and a 0.929 save percentage in 34 outings. He’s also one of the 10 finalists for this year’s Hobey Baker Memorial Award that’s given to NCAA hockey’s top player. This year’s performance also has him as one of three finalists for the Mike Richter Award that’s presented to NCAA DI’s best netminder.
For his career, Augustine boasts a 66-25-7 record with a 2.40 GAA and a 0.922 save percentage, including nine shutouts. Augustine’s time in East Lansing has coincided with the Spartans winning the Big 10 regular-season title all three years, as well as a pair of Big Ten tourney championships.
With Team USA, Augustine won a gold medal at last year’s IIHF World Junior Championship, where he compiled a 4-1 record (2.52 GAA, 0.917 save percentage). He helped Team USA win at world juniors in 2024, too, notching a 1.75 GAA and a 0.936 save percentage, both best among goalies at the tournament.
The Griffins have already clinched a Calder Cup Playoff spot, as well as a Central Division title with the league’s fewest goals allowed (137).
