The New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers played one of the most unwatchable games of the season on Tuesday night.
There were a combined 45 shots on goal and chances came few and far between. We also saw little to no physicality.
There was only one truly eventful moment in the game – at least from New Jersey’s perspective – so we’re going to focus on that.
Let’s waste no time combing through all of my favorite things about Jacob Markstrom’s goalie fight with Igor Shesterkin.
Video below if anybody needs a refresher.
Igor Shesterkin left his crease ~five seconds after being run over by Paul Cotter, understandably wanting to show his displeasure from the hit.
Fast forward 10 seconds and Jacob Markstrom is standing at the top of New York’s crease with his mask off and ready to throw.
I don’t know if Shesterkin was caught up in the heat of the moment, or simply didn’t expect Markstrom to be there given the decrease in goalie fights (or any fights), but how the fight started was comical.
Markstrom is legitimately standing a few feet away with his equipment off and Shesterkin is obliviously standing there in full gear, looking another direction.
Markstrom had to yell for his attention, almost to say “hey, yeah you, we’re fighting!” and the rest is history.
