In today’s NHL rumors rundown, the Edmonton Oilers could be eyeing a major offseason shakeup involving Darnell Nurse, the Toronto Maple Leafs continue to reshape their front office with some familiar names in the mix, and the Vegas Golden Knights appear close to locking in a key piece despite recent turbulence.

Keith Pelley spoke to the media on Monday, and his presser was anything but a home run. Some of his comments have analysts and fans shaking their heads, wondering what comes next.

Oilers Eye Top-Six Upgrade, Nurse Situation Looms

According to insider David Pagnotta, the Oilers are expected to pursue a legitimate top-six forward this offseason, with the possibility that a move involving Darnell Nurse could be part of that plan. Edmonton is projected to have roughly $17 million in cap space, giving GM Stan Bowman some flexibility.

The big question is whether Nurse, who is entering the fifth year of his long-term deal, factors into those discussions. While he has shown flashes of strong play recently, inconsistency remains a concern. If the Oilers explore the trade market—especially given the limited free-agent options—packaging Nurse in a deal to land a top-six winger could be an ideal scenario.

Clearly, this is not an immediate storyline. Pagnotta notes, “Obviously, the focus now is playoffs, and let’s try to get home ice, at the very least, if not the division. That’s where the focus is and should be. But certainly, Bowman and company have some ideas in mind based on how the season ends, and that’ll determine what direction and how they act.”

Could Jason Spezza Return to Toronto?

With the Maple Leafs searching for a new general manager, one intriguing name gaining traction is Jason Spezza. Insider Elliotte Friedman suggested that if Spezza feels ready for the role, there’s little doubt he would receive serious consideration.

Spezza, a former Leaf, previously worked in Toronto’s front office before joining the Pittsburgh Penguins alongside Kyle Dubas. Given he left Toronto because Dubas was fired, it’s unclear if Spezza would consider a return to the Maple Leafs.

Pelley’s Vision Raises Questions About Leafs’ Direction

CEO and President of MLSE, Keith Pelley, made it clear the Maple Leafs are not considering a rebuild, stating the organization already has “foundational pieces in place.” However, his admission that the team “didn’t see the train coming” with the rise of the Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens raised eyebrows. The comment about the Canadiens really caught people off guard.

Pelley emphasized that the next GM must be “data-centric,” signaling a shift toward a more analytics-driven approach. He also left open the possibility of hiring both a president and a GM.

While the messaging points to optimism and belief in the current roster, questions remain about the clarity of the plan. He didn’t sound like someone who had a handle on the situation. Toronto insists it can contend quickly—but the success of that vision will depend heavily on the next hire and how much authority that person is given.

Golden Knights Closing In on Andersson Extension

Despite a rocky stretch since acquiring Rasmus Andersson from the Calgary Flames, the Golden Knights appear committed to keeping him long-term. According to reports relayed by Jason Gregor of Sports 1440 and Ken Boehlke of Sin Bin Vegas, a new deal is believed to be “99 percent” complete.

Even with recent changes behind the bench—including the departure of Bruce Cassidy and the interim arrival of John Tortorella—the organization doesn’t appear ready to deviate from its original plan.

The delay in finalizing the extension likely comes down to timing, with Vegas still battling for playoff positioning. Once the season wraps up, expect the deal to be made official—barring any unexpected front-office changes.
