Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk has been fined $2,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct towards an opponent while on the bench during the Sens’ 4-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night.

At 10:01 of the first period, Tkachuk appeared to hit Buffalo’s Beck Malenstyn in the face with his stick while he was sitting on the bench. He was also issued a minor for slashing.

Tkachuk had one assist in the victory and was also issued a major later in the first period for fighting Sabres defenceman Logan Stanley.

The 26-year-old has recorded 20 goals and 52 points in 55 games this season.

The Senators (39-26-10, 88 points) moved into the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference with last night’s win. Ottawa holds the tiebreaker over the Detroit Red Wings (40-27-8, 88 points) and Columbus Blue Jackets (38-26-12, 88 points) via more regulation wins.

The Sens will host the Minnesota Wild at the Canadian Tire Centre on Saturday.
