Montreal Canadiens fans are still stunned by the second goal allowed to the New York Rangers last night.
Forward Will Cuylle scored under questionable circumstances against the Canadiens.
Upon closer review, there was clear interference on young goaltender Jacob Fowler.
The forward’s skate made direct contact with Fowler’s pad:
This contact completely disrupted his lateral movement and prevented him from making the save.
The main issue lies in how the on-ice officials analyzed the sequence.
The referees were clearly focused on the upper bodies of the players involved in the play in front of the net.
However, it was very clearly Will Cuylle’s lower body that was at fault on this play.
Did Martin St-Louis make the right decision not to challenge?
Behind the bench, the Montreal Canadiens’ head coach hesitated for a long time before making a final decision.
Martin St-Louis analyzed the situation with his assistants to evaluate whether a coach’s challenge was warranted.
Ultimately, MSL chose not to request a video review for goaltender interference.
He most likely wanted to avoid risking a costly minor penalty for delaying the game.
Officials will certainly need to review this sequence to adjust their judgment for important games ahead.
