The Los Angeles Kings look to keep their playoff hopes alive when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs in this series finale on Saturday.

The Los Angeles Kings go for the season-series sweep at home against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night. The Maple Leafs aren’t quite eliminated from the playoffs, but are on the verge with 77 points in the Eastern Conference. That is the same boat as the Florida Panthers, who are the back-to-back defending champs, which not many would have anticipated for either team at the start of the season. The last time Toronto missed the postseason was in 2016. If the playoffs started today, LA would also be on the outside looking in. But the Kings have 79 points, which is just as many as the San Jose Sharks, who hold the second Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. The Nashville Predators are ahead of the Kings, but they also have 79 points. The Kings won on the road in the first matchup against the Maple Leafs by a 4-3 final in overtime on Nov. 13. Quinton Byfield scored 35 seconds into overtime on a one-timer to win the game. Toronto scored the first two goals of the game and led on two separate occasions. The Maple Leafs somehow made it close despite getting outshot 37-15. On paper, these are two evenly matched teams, only separated by two points, but the Kings are the -185 favorites at home tonight to sweep the series.

The Kings have earned at least a point in their last two games, beating the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday in overtime but falling in a critical game against the Predators 5-4 in a shootout on Thursday. Nashville scored the first three goals of the game and went up 4-1, but LA rallied hard, scoring the next three goals. Joel Armia scored the game-tying goal halfway through the third period to force overtime. The shootout period went eight rounds, with Luke Evangelista scoring the game-winner for Nashville to earn the extra point. Nashville now leads the season series 2-0, hence the Predators still lead the Kings in the playoff chase despite the same number of points. These two play again soon on April 6. The opener in Nashville on Oct. 25 also ended 5-4, with the Predators winning in a shootout.

The Sharks are also thwarting the Kings’ playoff hopes, as San Jose is coming off a 4-1 victory over the Maple Leafs on Friday. It was the fourth straight win for the Sharks, with Zack Ostapchuk scoring the first goal of the game, which was his first in nearly three months. Toronto couldn’t solve goalie Alex Nedeljkovic, who was the first star with 19 saves. The only goal he gave up was in the second when Toronto’s John Tavares scored on the power play. San Jose swept the season series 2-0. This West Coast swing doesn’t get much easier tonight in this finale.
