Philadelphia Flyers

Philly Hockey Now: The Philadelphia Flyers picked up a massive two points on Friday against the New York Islanders in their 4-1 win. It was domination from the start by the Flyers, who seem to be playing their best hockey when it matters most.

Matvei Michkov played a big role in the team’s win, playing one of his best games of the season. His three-point night with a goal and two assists led the way for the Flyers. Michkov needed a big night, and did so in a meaningful game.

Friday’s game was a big one for the Flyers. It helped them clarify their path to the postseason. While the Wild Card seemed like the most likely route, Friday may have proved that it’s not the clearest path.

The Playoff Race

We had to use ESPN’s standings page today, because NHL.com has yet to update. With that said, here is how the Eastern Conference Wild Card looks after Friday’s games.

With the Flyers’ win vs. the Islanders, they have created a four-way tie at 88 points in the Wild Card race. Since the Bruins are pulling far ahead of the rest of the pack, it looks like it’s a four-way fight for one playoff spot.

As we talked about on Friday, that might make the Flyers’ best path to the playoffs through the Metropolitan. Especially because the Red Wings and Senators each have a game in hand on Philly.

There is plenty of action on Saturday, including four games that could impact the Flyers’ playoff push. Here is Saturday’s schedule.

Watching Guide for Saturday’s Games

As usual, the bolded team is the team the Flyers need to win in the best-case scenario.

Red Wings (88, WC3) @ Rangers – 12:30 pm EST
Wild (96, C3) @ Senators (88, WC2) – 1:00 pm EST
Islanders (89, M3) @ Hurricanes (102, M1) – 7:00 pm EST
Jets (76, WWC6) @ Blue Jackets (88, WC4) – 7:00 pm EST

The first two are self-explanatory. For now, the Red Wings and Senators are playing their game in hand vs. the Flyers. A loss would make things even for the time being.

The second two games have an impact on both the Wild Card and Metropolitan race. If both the Islanders and Blue Jackets lose on Saturday, the Flyers could jump into the third spot in the Metropolitan Division with a win on Sunday.

NHL rumors & news

Boston Hockey Now: Speaking of Sunday’s game, the Flyers’ opponent, the Boston Bruins, have a pretty impressive streak going. Since the new year, they have lost 13 times. They have answered with at least a point in the next game every time, and 10 of them have been wins. Jack Studley breaks down that trend.

The Bruins have a tough matchup against the Lightning on Saturday. Philly should be hoping for a Bruins win.

Toronto Hockey Now: The Maple Leafs, who are now eliminated from the postseason, are looking to retool this offseason. That could mean trading young star Matthew Knies. While that could be a shocking move, the reported asking price explains why the Leafs might consider it. Dave Litman breaks down the reported asking price for Mattew Knies.

Vegas Hockey Now: The John Tortorella Era is off to a roaring start in Vegas. They are holding on, pretty firmly, to a playoff spot with 6 games to go. It’s a small sample size, but Cooper Krigbaum writes about whether the hot start can last.

Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets have surprised a lot of people this season. They’re right in the fight for a playoff spot, and could find themselves in one if things go right on Saturday. It’s officially put-up-or-shut-up time for the Blue Jackets.
