Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk has been fined $2,500 for a slash from the bench that also earned him a minor penalty against the Buffalo Sabres.

During the first period, Ottawa Senators defenseman Jordan Spence bumped Buffalo’s Beck Malenstyn along the boards, pushing him into the bench. Tkachuk, seated on the bench, delivered a downward slash with his stick, catching Malenstyn in the face.  The officials spotted the sneaky stickwork, whistling a minor penalty on Tkachuk and pulling him off the bench to head directly to the penalty box.

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety followed up the penalty with a monetarily punitive decision of their own, tacking on a $2,500 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The Ottawa Senators went on to defeat the Buffalo Sabres 4-1. Officials for the game were referees Frederick L’Ecuyer (#17) and Chris Rooney (#5) with Mark Shewcyk (#92) and Jeremy Faucher (#97) on the lines.
