The Calgary Flames look to avoid a four-game losing streak when they host the Utah Mammoth on Sunday night. The Mammoth are trying to get back on track, playing on back-to-back nights in this game against the Flames. Utah lost to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, ending the Mammoth’s five-game winning streak. Fortunately for Utah, it punched its ticket to the playoffs on Thursday with a win over the Nashville Predators in just its second season of existence. The previous iteration of the Mammoth, the Arizona Coyotes, had missed the playoffs in 11 of their last 12 seasons before moving to Utah. The Mammoth hold the top wild card spot with 90 points. This series is tied up 1-1 heading into this season finale after the Flames won Game 2 on Dec. 6 at home, 2-0. Dustin Wolf was brilliant in net, stopping 28 shots for his fifth career shutout and the first star of the game. Yegor Sharangovich scored just 16 seconds into the first period. That would be the only goal of the game until Connor Zary scored on an empty net late in the third.

The Mammoth lost to the Hurricanes 4-1 on Saturday, and it was Carolina’s sixth win in its last seven games, padding its best record in the Eastern Conference. Jordan Staal was the first star of the game with a goal and an assist, his 20th of the season, a feat he last accomplished a decade ago. Frederik Andersen was too much in net for Utah, stopping 26 shots. The only goal to get by for the Mammoth was from Dylan Guenther in the third period to get within a goal. Sebastian Aho scored late in the third period to put the game away after killing four of five penalty opportunities for Utah.

Calgary also lost 4-1 on Saturday against its Pacific Division rival, the Seattle Kraken. Nikke Kokko was brilliant in his first career start with 26 saves, earning him the first star of the game. Hunter Brzustewicz scored the first goal of the game a minute into the second period, but Calgary couldn’t get on the board again. Seattle won the series 2-1 in the process.
