The Ducks are still trying to earn a playoff spot, currently holding the third and final spot in the Pacific Division with 89 points. They are only two points off the first place seeded Vegas Golden Knights, who clinched a playoff spot with a win over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday. The Ducks have three more games left in the season and are looking to use the momentum they earned by beating the San Jose Sharks on Thursday to end a six-game losing streak.

It will help their cause tonight that Vancouver has the worst record in the league by a wide margin. It only gets tougher from there, with games against Minnesota and Nashville, who are still fighting for a playoff spot. Despite their struggles, the Canucks lead the series 2-1. Vancouver won the first two games between these Pacific Division rivals, but Anaheim bounced back with a 5-3 road win on March 24. Mikael Granlund scored twice and Alex Killorn added a goal and an assist. John Carlson was the first star of the game with three assists.

Carlson added another three points in the Ducks’ win against San Jose on Thursday, with his first career hat trick in his 17-year career in the NHL. Carlson has put up 12 points in 13 games for the Ducks since coming over in a trade from the Washington Capitals where he spent his entire career. Anaheim dominated the game, putting up the first four goals to tie the regular season series 2-2. The Sharks aren’t technically eliminated from the playoffs, but things aren’t looking promising for San Jose, five points back of the last wild card slot with three games left, all on the road.

To add to the woes of the Sharks, Vancouver is coming off a 4-3 shootout victory against San Jose on Saturday. The win ended a four-game losing streak for the Canucks. Vancouver had lost 10 of its last 11 games before beating San Jose. Linus Karlsson scored the deciding goal in the sixth round of the shootout period to give Vancouver the extra point. Teddy Blueger tied the game on the power play for Vancouver with just three minutes left in regulation. The victory helped Vancouver avoid the four-game season series sweep. It won’t help the Cancucks’ cause tonight, though, playing on back-to-back nights.
