The son of Boston Bruins legend Gerry Cheevers was arrested on charges he was selling discounted sports tickets that weren’t real.
Leicester Police Department detectives arrested Robert Cheevers, 57, at his East Boston apartment earlier this month after what they described as a “months-long investigation” into the fake tickets scam complaints.
Police say that Robert Cheevers’ scams were wide-ranging. In addition to the Leicester warrant for larceny of more than $1,200 by a single scheme, he was subject to a warrant out of Newburyport District Court for the same offense as well as a warrant from Clark County, Nevada — the home of Las Vegas — for burglary, felony theft, and insufficient funds.
Robert Cheevers was arraigned at East Brookfield District Court and is being held in Worcester County jail, according to a police statement. Leicester Police thanked the police departments of Newburyport, North Andover, and Boston and the Clark County, Nevada, District Attorney’s office for investigative support.
Robert Cheevers’ father, Gerry Cheevers, was a goalie for the Boston Bruins beginning in the 1965-1966 season and was known for his league-leading performances and his practice of marking his mask with stitches to show where pucks had hit him.
According to the NHL, Gerry Cheevers retired after the 1979-1980 season following 227 wins and 26 shutouts across 418 regular-season games, with his playoff games record of 53 wins and eight shutouts is the best of all Bruins goalies.
