Along the way there, they’ve gotten rid of a 31-year old defenseman.

On Thursday, they placed Matthew Dumba on waivers, placing his $3.75 million contract out there to be cleared off the books.

Dumba played just 11 games this season for the Penguins.

He has spent much of the season with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

This move has to do with the NHL’s altered playoff salary cap rules, as well as potential AHL playoff roster spots.

The reality is that Dumba didn’t become the player the Penguins hoped he could be for them, and he’ll almost certainly go unclaimed and become a free agent.

Dumba has played 748 games in the NHL with 85 goals and 176 assists (261 points).

This season, it was 11 games with a goal and two assists.

Dumba spent last season with the Dallas Stars. Before that, he played for Arizona and Tampa Bay in 2023-24. He had spent his first 10 NHL seasons with the Minnesota Wild.

Dumba seems to have fallen off pretty quickly after mostly being a quality player for Minnesota, and now it’s not clear what his NHL future might hold.

For now, it just won’t be in the Penguins’ organization.
