The Toronto Maple Leafs fell apart in the 2025-26 season and it appears they are going into a major retooling as they take stock of their disastrous year. General manager Brad Treliving was fired in the final weeks of the season and the Maple Leafs are working on bringing in a new leader.

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman of SportsNet, the Leafs have already interviewed Chris Pronger and six other candidates. Those who have had Zoom conversations with the powers that be in Toronto besides Pronger include Ryan Bowness, John Chayka, Mike Gillis, Ryan Hardy, Ryan Martin and Brandon Pridham.

There are others that are likely to get interviewed as well. Friedman surmised that Gregory Campbell of the Panthers, Evan Gold of the Bruins and Brad Pascall of the Flames are likely to get their chances if they haven’t spoken with the Leafs already.

The New Jersey Devils made a bold move by bringing Sunny Mehta in to serve as their new general manager. There is little doubt that Mehta would have been a serious candidate for the Maple Leafs if the Devils had not taken him off the market.

The Maple Leafs were expected to make a run at the Atlantic Division title, but they were never able to recover from the offseason trade of Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights. Marner had been one of Toronto’s top set-up men and point producers for years but the Leafs never got anyone to replace him.

Captain Auston Matthews finished the year with 27 goals and his season ended early after he suffered a knee injury following a collision with Radko Gudas of the Anaheim Ducks.
