The Sunny Mehta era has officially begun in New Jersey.
The New Jersey Devils introduced Mehta in a press conference yesterday afternoon at the Prudential Center. Now, it’s time to get to work.
Mehta has a few tasks at hand, but among the first decisions he will face is whether to retain head coach Sheldon Keefe for the 2026-27 season.
Mehta mentioned there will be an evaluation process for everyone early on, so no decision on Keefe or anyone else has been made yet.
Keefe has had an up-and-down tenure as the Devils’ coach. They barely made the playoffs in 2024-25 and missed out comfortably this season. However, the team’s struggles are far from solely his fault. Let’s look at why the Devils may be best off retaining him to start the 2026-27 campaign.
