There’s been plenty of speculation in Toronto surrounding what will happen with Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly, but one Insider has some bad news regarding the veteran blueliner. With Leafs GM Brad Treliving looking to change the DNA this off-season, there are a few players with term remaining on their contracts who could be shipped out. One of those players is currently the longest-tenured player on the Maple Leafs’ roster, Morgan Rielly.

Morgan Rielly May Not Be Looking for a Fresh Start

During locker clean-out day on Tuesday last week, Rielly put any questions about where he wants to be to rest after stating he was ‘not even thinking about it’ when asked if he was pondering a fresh start with a new NHL team by reporters.

On Thursday, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun essentially put any rumours of a Rielly trade to rest during his appearance on TSN.

“People have wondered, could the Leafs go to him and ask him to waive his no-move to bring more DNA change? The answer is ‘no chance’ from what we understand. Morgan Rielly has a full no-move. He loves being a Leaf.”

A $7.5M cap hit and a no-movement clause lasts until the end of the 2027-28 season before it changes to a modified no-trade clause, which means the Leafs will be stuck him for at least a couple more seasons.

Rielly admittedly struggled this season, but seemed to find his footing near the end of the season and in the playoffs as he became more familiar with Brandon Carlo after the Leafs acquired the hulking blueliner from the Boston Bruins at the trade deadline.

With Carlo signed for another two seasons, Rielly will have a consistent partner for an entire season for the first time in what seems like forever, and it should allow him to be at his best offensively.
