Cole Hutson attends Montreal Canadiens’ playoff game to support his older brother Lane Hutson: ‘He’s awesome’

Cole Hutson was back in the Bell Centre to take in some Montreal Canadiens playoff action on Sunday night.

Hutson, who attended Game 3 between the Washington Capitals and Canadiens last year wearing a Habs sweater, wore a much more nondescript outfit this time to cheer on his older brother, Lane Hutson, against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Lane scored the overtime game-winning goal for the Canadiens to put them up 2-1 in the series on Friday night.

“He was pretty fired up last night, but he’s a guy that moves on quick,” Cole told Sportsnet’s Kyle Bukauskas. “Yeah, he scored the OT winner, but three hours later, he’s on to the next game, so he’s a really humble guy, and that’s why he’s awesome.”

Hutson was also asked about the group text that he, Lane, their older brother Quinn, and their younger brother Lars are all a part of, which gets particularly lively this time of year.

“Yeah, mostly it’s a lot of good, but during the game, all game round, it’s me and my brothers texting the group chat of what’s going on in the game, whether we’re watching or not,” Hutson said. “So, it’s always good just to check into the group chat and see what’s going on.”

After Lane rifled home a 90.1 mph slap shot to down the Lightning on Friday, Cole mentioned that their college head coach at Boston University, former NHLer Jay Pandolfo, joked that the two brothers must have switched places, given how hard Lane’s shot was.

“He said something along the lines of I had him fooled the whole time, thinking I had the harder shot, but last night was one of his best ones of the year, so hopefully we see another one,” Hutson said.

Cole’s Capitals barely missed out on this year’s postseason, but the 19-year-old rearguard showed in his first 14 career NHL games exactly why he was so highly touted coming out of BU.

The 2024 second-round pick finished the season with 10 points (3g, 7a) and will be one of the favorites to win next year’s Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year, something that Lane achieved last year.
