Sad news in the hockey world this morning in the middle of the NHL playoffs.

John Garrett, one of the most recognizable voices in Canadian hockey, has passed away suddenly at the age of 75.

Sportsnet confirmed the news in a statement released this morning on X.

“It is with profound sadness we share the news of the sudden passing of John Garrett, a beloved colleague, friend, and one of the most familiar voices in Canadian hockey. “Cheech” was a legend.

Garrett, nicknamed “Cheech,” spent decades behind the microphone as an analyst for Vancouver Canucks games on Sportsnet.

Before his broadcasting career, he played as a goaltender in the NHL with the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks, as well as in the World Hockey Association.

TVA Sports reporter Renaud Lavoie was among many to react to the sad news.

“Sad news. John Garrett was always smiling and has been an important figure in hockey in Canada.” Lavoie wrote on X.

Sportsnet described Garrett as a legend whose warmth, humour, and genuine love for the game made him beloved by fans and colleagues alike.

“He brought insight, authenticity, and heart to every broadcast. He will be remembered not only for his remarkable career, but for the kindness and joy he shared with everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. John will be missed immensely. Our deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones.”
