The New York Rangers hired Mike Sullivan to be their new head coach. Now, it seems the Rangers and Penguins could be doing a big switch in staff. Reports have surfaced of assistant coach Dan Muse interviewing with GM Kyle Dubas for the head coaching job in Pittsburgh.

While Mike Sullivan is poised to take over the Rangers organization and drive the team into the future, the past looks like a blur.

Included in that past are the remnants of Peter Laviolette’s staff, and one of those people, Dan Muse, an assistant, could be headed to Pittsburgh.

That is, if he’s convincing enough when it comes to his interview with GM Kyle Dubas.

It was reported that Muse was another candidate for the Penguins’ head coaching job, and could be on the way out should he be successful.

Muse has had a connection to Peter Laviolette since his days in Nashville, which, of course, helped him land a job in New York. He’s had experience developing prospects and coaching the USA NTDP U18 Team in 2023.

A job he left to join the Rangers:

The biggest job Muse has had was the one he just left. For three years he coached in the U.S. National Training and Development program, working the last two seasons with the current crop of draft-eligible players.

Now, he’s looking to take his experiences to another team in the Metropolitan Division, as the Penguins gear up for a rebuild.

«He is hard-nosed (with an) old-school work ethic combined with new-school intelligence and progressive thinking, use of analytics. He’ll likely be running the PK,» Valiquette said.

Could he be Kyle Dubas’s answer for the next Penguins dynasty, or will they fizzle out under Muse and become another bottom-dwelling team once Sidney Crosby exits?
