Journalist Karine Hains of The Hockey News clarified an important detail that many Montreal Canadiens fans were unaware of.
The Canadiens have until August 15, 2028, to sign Hage.

It’s a detail that puts things back into perspective in a situation that has generated significant discussion since his decision to return to the University of Michigan.
Now that a few weeks have passed since that decision, it’s easier to evaluate it with some distance.

That decision raised concerns, with some even suggesting the possibility of a trade this summer.
But with a signing deadline set for August 15, 2028, general manager Kent Hughes has ample time to manage the situation.
Hage could change his mind as early as this summer, just as Logan Cooley did in 2023.
He could also complete a third season at Michigan and sign afterward.
In either scenario, the Montreal Canadiens retain full control over his rights.
It’s also worth remembering that Hughes moved up to 21st overall in the 2024 NHL Draft to select Hage ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who were targeting him at 23rd.
That’s not a move you make to let a player walk away.
There’s no need to panic.
