The Los Angeles Kings have identified veteran head coach Bruce Cassidy as a primary candidate for their vacant head coaching position for the 2026-27 season. The search follows another first-round playoff exit and the recent retirement of franchise icon Anze Kopitar.
As reported by David Pagnotta of SiriusXM NHL Network Radio on the “Hot Stove” program, Cassidy has emerged as a potential fit to lead the roster. Cassidy brings a high-profile resume, including a Stanley Cup championship with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023 and the Jack Adams Award as the 2019-20 coach of the year.

The 60-year-old coach maintains a track record of regular-season consistency, including a Presidents’ Trophy win in 2020. During his tenure with the Golden Knights, Cassidy achieved two 50-win seasons and never finished a campaign with a record below .500.
Despite Cassidy’s accolades, the Kings face significant internal challenges regarding roster construction. The organization has cycled through four head coaches in the last seven seasons, including Todd McLellan, Jim Hiller, and interim stints by Willie Desjardins and D.J. Smith.
The team has struggled with inconsistency in goaltending and defense, while the offense faltered during the most recent postseason. Since winning the Stanley Cup in 2014, Los Angeles has failed to win a single playoff series, marking one of the most difficult stretches in the league over the last 12 years.
