A former Detroit Red Wings player will win the Stanley Cup this year.

The Florida Panthers hope it’s just one. The Edmonton Oilers would be delighted if multiple former Red Wings hoisted the trophy.

The Panthers and Oilers are set for a Stanley Cup Final rematch that starts on Wednesday. It’s the first time teams have met in back-to-back Finals since the Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins in 2008 and 2009.

The series features several former Red Wings and three ex-Grand Rapids Griffins:

Tomas Nosek, Florida: This checking-line center and penalty killer has a knack for joining good teams. An undrafted free agent from the Czech Republic, he played 17 games with the Red Wings before being claimed by Vegas in the 2017 expansion draft. He played for the Golden Knights team that lost to Washington in the Cup Final in 2018 and the Boston team that won an NHL-record 65 games in 2022-23. Now he’s seeking his first Cup. He’s appeared in 10 playoff games this season (no goals, three assists, 11:26 average ice time). Nosek played in 176 games with the Griffins.

Calvin Pickard, Edmonton: He might have saved the Oilers’ Cup hopes by stepping in for an ineffective Stuart Skinner in Game 3 vs. Los Angeles, after Edmonton lost the first two games, and reeling off six wins in a row before suffering a lower-body injury May 8 in Game 2 vs. Vegas. He’s now healthy and backing up Skinner. The journeyman Pickard played in 12 games with the Red Wings and 79 with the Griffins over parts of three seasons from 2019-20 to 2021-22.

Mattias Janmark: Selected in the third round by Detroit in 2013 (79th overall), he never played a game with the Red Wings, getting dealt to Dallas in the 2015 trade for Erik Cole. He appeared in two games with the Griffins in 2013-14. Janmark has three goals and an assist in 16 playoff games, averaging 11:41, and playing on the second penalty killing unit.

Troy Stetcher, Edmonton: Stetcher is a depth defenseman who’s played six playoff games as an injury replacement, averaging nearly 16 minutes a game (no points). He played 60 games for the Red Wings from 2020-2022 before being traded to the Kings for a seventh-round pick. He’s since played for Calgary and has two stints with Arizona. He played in 66 games this season with the Oilers (three goals, four assists).

Jake Walman, Edmonton: Sending a conditional 2026 first-round pick (top-12 protected) to San Jose proved to be a good move. Walman is averaging nearly 20 minutes a game (one goal, five assists in 16 games) on the third pairing with John Klingberg and is tied for the playoff league lead in plus-minus (plus-12). He’s playing on the second power play and penalty killing units. Walman has one year remaining on the three-year extension he signed in 2023 with the Red Wings ($3.4 million average annual value), who needed to attach a second-round pick to unload his entire contract to San Jose last offseason.
