Defenseman Justin Faulk won the bragging rights over Moritz Seider in the Detroit Red Wings dressing room for USA’s 4-3 shootout win against Germany at the World Championships in Switzerland.
But that result was in serious doubt for much of that Wednsay game.
Germany claimed a 3-2 lead in the second period and held that advantage until Pittsburgh Penguins forward Tommy Novak scored with 5:47 left in regulation.
Washington Capitals forward Ryan Leonard scored in the final round of the shootout to give USA a two-point win. (Teams earn three points if they win in regulation).
Seider, the German captain, gave his team an early lead with a goal from the point. Faulk played 26:52 minutes and had five shots on goal.
The win keeps USA in the hunt for one of the quarterfinal spots in the medal round.
In Case You Missed It
Detroit legend Nicklas Lidstrom has plenty to say about Red Wings defenseman Albert Johansson.
The Grand Rapids Griffins play on the road against the Chicago Wolves tonight. It’s an elimination game for the Griffins. If they don’t win, they are eliminated.
Team Sweden wants Griffins players Axel Sandin-Pellikka and Erik Gustafsson for the World Championships.
Red Wings Extra
Detroit prospect Max Plante played only 7:22 minutes for USA in the 4-3 shootout win against Germany. . . For those who have lost track, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard has four goals and three assists for seven points in seven games in the AHL playoffs. Thinking Carter Mazur, Marco Kasper and MBN on Detroit’s third line next season. That’s a lot of hitting and some scoring ability. Maybe MBN proves he can play in the top six or Kasper or Mazur step up.
