Joseph Woll is at the center of Craig Berube’s offseason crease squeeze in Toronto.
The trade idea is simple enough: move Woll to the Philadelphia Flyers and unclog a net that could get crowded fast next season.
With Anthony Stolarz locked in and Dennis Hildeby still pushing for NHL time, the Maple Leafs may not be able to keep all three goalies in clean roles.
That’s what gives this rumor some traction. Hildeby is waivers-exempt, but sending him back to the Marlies again could just delay a bigger decision.
The proposed package coming back to Toronto is notable. The Leafs would get Samuel Ersson, prospect Alex Bump, and Philadelphia’s 2026 second-round pick.
In that mock deal, the Flyers would receive Woll plus a 2026 fifth-round pick. For Toronto, the draw is balance more than splash.
Why this idea actually fits Toronto
This isn’t about giving up on Joseph Woll. It’s about turning a crowded crease into depth at more than one position before camp opens.
Ersson would give the Leafs another goalie with NHL experience, even if he isn’t the headline piece in the return. That matters over a long season.
The real swing piece may be Bump. He scored 5 goals in 17 games this season and added 2 more in 6 playoff games, which gives Toronto another young forward worth tracking.
If Nick Robertson climbs into a bigger role, Bump could slide into the middle six conversation and give the Leafs another option with some bite.
Then there’s the draft capital. Philadelphia’s second-rounder is projected at 53rd overall, and that kind of asset has value for a team still trying to stock its pipeline.
The bigger point is this: Toronto may need to solve a roster problem before it becomes a training-camp distraction. Berube doesn’t need a three-man crease debate hanging over the room.
Woll still carries value around the league, and the Flyers have a reason to look for help in net. That makes this more than random trade-board noise.
Would the Leafs miss Woll’s upside? Sure. But if Toronto believes Stolarz can carry the crease and Hildeby is ready for the next step, this is the kind of move that starts to make real sense.
