Reports are that the Detroit Red Wings want to retain only one of their six unrestricted free agents. That one player is Patrick Kane. The remaining five who they are likely to let walk are forwards David Perron, who they acquired at the trade deadline, and James van Riemsdyk. They are also letting defenseman Travis Hamonic and Erik Gustafsson, along with goalie Cam Talbot, all walk.

This shows the frustration of Red Wings General Manager Steve Yzerman. The team choked away a division lead and missed the playoffs. It also means they’re likely to address certain areas on the roster to ensure that a collapse doesn’t happen again. The one interesting thing is Talbot, which will be intriguing to see how the Red Wings maneuver the goalie situation. John Gibson will be the starter, but who is backing him up? Rumors have circulated that Sebastian Cossa may be on the move this offseason. With the success of Michal Postava in the Grand Rapids Calder Cup run, could he be the guy? Or do they go out and sign a goalie for two seasons to be a backup until top prospect Trey Augustine is ready?
It’s also no surprise Kane is staying put, but letting van Riemsdyk go is interesting after the season he had in Detroit. At certain points this season, he was a key cog to their offseason, but it may also signal a big signing, along with maybe the goal to acquire a big piece in a trade centered around Cossa. No matter what, it is the Red Wings and Steve Yzerman who are certainly making a stand for the 2026-27 season, and missing the playoffs will not be tolerated.
