The uncertainty surrounding Jason Robertson’s future with the Dallas Stars may finally be nearing a resolution. After months of trade speculation and contract discussions, a recent report by ESPN insider Emily Kaplan indicate that a long-term extension between the organization and its star winger is the most likely outcome.

The 26-year-old completed the 2025-26 season with 45 goals and 51 assists for 96 points. After a 109-point campaign in 2022-23, he proved it was no fluke, reaching 40 goals for the third time in his NHL career. He also took on a bigger role than ever, averaging a career-high 20:15 of ice time per game.

The contract situation has drawn plenty of attention because Robertson’s four-year, $31 million deal, which carried a $7.75 million average annual value, expired following the 2025-26 season. As a restricted free agent with arbitration rights, Robertson remains under Dallas’ control, with the Stars holding exclusive negotiating rights and the ability to match any outside offer sheet.

Financially, however, the challenge remains substantial. General manager Jim Nill reportedly has just $11.03 million in projected salary-cap space available while also needing to complete the rest of the roster. Players producing at Robertson’s level usually cash in on deals north of $12 million annually, with Mikko Rantanen’s recent deal serving as a comparable benchmark. Some projections have even placed Robertson’s market value significantly higher.

Despite those cap concerns, both Kaplan’s report and comments from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman suggest neither side is interested in a separation. Nill has publicly stated that re-signing Robertson is his foremost objective this summer and expressed a desire for the winger to spend the remainder of his career in Dallas.

Robertson has spent all six of his NHL seasons with the Stars and has earned approximately $32.6 million through 2026. If an extension is finalized, it would end months of trade rumors and allow Dallas to focus on other roster decisions as it looks to build a team capable of advancing beyond recent playoff disappointments.
