It’s been a while since Calgary Flames fans have heard from Darryl Sutter.
The 67-year-old is one of the more recognizable names in franchise history. He served as the head coach of the Flames on two separate occasions and held the GM role from 2003 to 2010.
After a lengthy run with the LA Kings followed by some time away from the game, Sutter returned to the Flames organization as their head coach partway through the 2020-21 season. He wound up winning the Jack Adams Award in 2021-22 before being fired after the conclusion of the 2022-23 campaign.
After being fired, Sutter went away from the public spotlight once again, though that will soon change.
On Tuesday afternoon, Sportsnet’s Justin Bourne confirmed that he is releasing a book with Sutter.
Life’s not too different. If you put in an honest effort and take care of those closest to you, you’ll be rewarded.
With all that in mind, I’m pumped to share:

The book, titled The Code of the West – Lessons From the Ranch and the Rink, is set to be released on Oct. 13.
“[Sutter] is better known and even more loved for his reputation—as an advocate of aggressive, hard-nosed hockey, as a no-nonsense farmer who was never softened by the bright lights of fame, as one of six brothers who made it to the NHL, and as perhaps the most entertainingly blunt interviewee in the history of the game, capable of dissolving a scrum of reporters into laughter with a deadpan one-liner,” reads the book’s description.
“Fans, players, media, and opponents—everyone knows what they are going to get with Darryl Sutter. No bull. Just the stuff that means something.”
Fans can pre-order the book through Indigo for $26.60. There will also be an ebook version released, which will cost $16.99.
Before getting into coaching, Sutter enjoyed a 406-game career where he recorded 161 goals and 279 points. His entire playing career was spent with the Chicago Blackhawks, where he played alongside some of the game’s all-time greats, including Denis Savard and Tony Esposito.
He’s coached many legends as well, such as Chris Chelios, Jeremy Roenick, Bernie Nichols, Jarome Iginla, Anze Kopitar, Drew Doughty, and many more.
During his coaching career, Sutter was able to lead the LA Kings to two Stanley Cup championships, in 2012 and 2014.
Throughout his time as a coach, Sutter was also known for having some run-ins with players due to his brash and hard-nosed persona. That in and of itself gives fans, particularly Flames fans, plenty of reason to give this book a read.
