The NHL trade chatter went from lukewarm to boiling Thursday with a pair of big-name trade reports beginning with Dylan Larkin asking out of Detroit and the Edmonton Oilers preparing to dump Darnell Nurse. Elsehwere, why does the NHL have goaltender interference rules and review if they’re just going to soil the bed almost every time? The Vegas Golden Knights had a late go-ahead goal waved off in their eventual Game 2 loss, but backside replays show a loose puck whereas the NHL claimed it was covered. And we combined trade reports, history, and math to show a Pittsburgh Penguins trade opportunity at the NHL Draft.
The NHL goaltender interference review process isn’t broken, but it is clearly run by the wrong people. It is headed by the same few people who have been fired and shuffled around for their entire careers and have single-handedly help back the game.

Ask me how I really feel.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: I must confess, I was proud of this story. It took quite a while to write, but it clearly and unassailably shows a possibility to trade up in the 2026 NHL Draft. Here’s just how far up they can go in the Penguins trade analysis.
And we did a podcast/Live Chat Thursday. I did a little prep. Sat down without being rushed, and I think we had a pretty good go. Make sure you like our YouTube page because I think I’m going to randomly pop up over the summer.
The average person watched for over 27 minutes. That’s a HUGE number. Glad you enjoyed it.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
Detroit Hockey Now: Oh the boys in Detroit had a field day Thursday. The second story is a hard bodyslam on Larkin. So, first the breaking news–Dylan Larkin is done with the Detroit Red Wings and has requested a trade.
Now then. Bob Duff is one of my favorites. He’s covered the Red Wings for decades, and he maintains that old-school journalist core. He absolutely teed up Larkin in a column that you need to read. Here’s the headline: It’s official Larkin is soft.
Damn!
Yes, we’ll have more today on Larkin’s likely cost and potential fit with the Penguins. I wanted to have a day to see if any suitors emerged or other news broke, but I will do the work and answer the question of what will it cost.

Sportsnet: The other scoop would have been a bombshell, too. Mark Spector reports that the Edmonton Oilers are going to meet with defenseman Darnell Nurse to tell him they want to trade him.
New Jersey Hockey Now: Also, a scoop for the Hockey Now team as James Nichols breaks news that made New Jersey Devils fans happy. The team is closing in on a new contract for Arseny Gritsyuk.
Philly Hockey Now: It looks like the Philadelphia Flyers are getting close to a long-term extension–but can’t sign until July 1–for goalie Dan Vladar.
Carolina Hockey Now: OK, here’s the perspective of the Game 2 OT win (Jordan Staal) from our Carolina Hurricanes side.

So, let’s get into the goaltender interference, which wiped away what could have been the game-winning goal, and the challenge that gave Carolina a power play, which they used for the go-ahead goal.
John Tortorella didn’t waste words on his challenge. He said succinctly, “I would challenge that 10 of 10 times.” The NHL claimed that goalie Frederick Andersen was covering the puck and Pavel Dorofeyev pushed the glove, preventing Andersen from playing his position. So, no goal. Now, look at this picture–it was obvious on the replay. The puck was loose. The puck was across the line well before the whistle, too. Just an avalanche of denial to make the no-goal overturn:
