The Vegas Golden Knights are in full control of Game 3 after a four-goal outburst in the second period. Mitch Marner logged a natural hat trick as the Golden Knights now lead the Carolina Hurricanes 4-0, and Vegas is 20 minutes away from a 2-1 series lead in the Stanley Cup Final.
After starting the period watching two goals get waived off — one for offside and one for goaltender interference — the Golden Knights simply turned up the pressure. Mitch Marner led the charge with three consecutive goals, and he now owns the franchise record for points in a single postseason with 28 and counting.
The Hurricanes simply collapsed after a pretty solid first period. Carolina’s disastrous stretch began with a too many men penalty that led to a Tomas Hertl power-play goal, and it couldn’t get out of its own way after that.
It probably goes without saying this game is immensely important, and the historical data backs that up. Teams that win Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final when the series is tied 1-1 have won 77.4% of the time. Road teams that win Game 3 in these situations have won the series 83.3% of the time. That number is 67.0% for the home team.
