Let’s clarify the framework of this exercise right away.
This is a trade proposal imagined by a social media page, not a substantiated rumour (at least for now).
The context, however, is very real.
Kent Hughes is looking for an impact forward for his top six, and several options have recently come off the board.
On the other side, Robertson could become available in Dallas due to his significant contract demands.
That is what is driving people to explore alternative avenues.
According to reports making the rounds, contract negotiations between Robertson and the Stars have reportedly stalled.
The hypothetical scenario is built around that premise.
In this proposal, Robertson would then sign a seven-year contract worth $12.5 million per season with the Canadiens.
The return would be steep for Montreal.
The scenario would send Michael Hage and David Reinbacher to the Stars.
They are two of the organization’s most promising prospects.
Hage, a first-round pick in 2024, recorded 52 points in 39 NCAA games last season.
Reinbacher, meanwhile, was selected fifth overall in 2023 and posted 24 points in 57 American Hockey League games.
Giving up two former first-round picks is a hefty price to pay, but let’s not forget that Robertson is a 45-goal scorer who put up 109 points in 2023.
