A cultural exchange hockey camp is providing young athletes from Ukraine and Romania with an opportunity to sharpen their skills, build new friendships, and experience life in the United States.
The program brings players together for training and competition while also immersing them in American culture through host families and community activities. For many participants, the experience extends far beyond hockey.
“Prepare for next season as a hockey player, and also develop character and live with different families, with different people, and meet new people here,” said player Maksym Kukharenko.
Athletes say they have enjoyed both their time in the United States and the connections they’ve made. Living with host families and meeting people from different backgrounds has helped create lasting memories and friendships.
“I feel it’s really nice,” Kukharenko said. “People are really great to me and to all my friends, so I really like it being here.”
For many of the Ukrainian players, the camp also offers a welcome break from the challenges they face at home as the war in Ukraine continues.
“It’s really exciting for them, especially in this situation,” said hockey coach Faevganiy Pysarenko. “Now they have back home difficult times.”
Coaches say the support of American host families, sponsors, and community members has been essential in making the program possible. They say the athletes are grateful for the opportunity to travel, compete, and experience a different culture.
“They are really happy to be here, and everybody really appreciates the people from the United States and sponsors who help us,” Pysarenko said.
As the camp continues, organizers hope the experience will leave a lasting impact on the young athletes, helping them grow not only as hockey players, but also as individuals. While their time in the United States is temporary, the friendships, lessons, and memories they have gained may stay with them for years to come.
