In keeping with Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas’s intention to reward Taylor Gauthier and his loyalty to the organization, the Penguins are moving forward with the path of least resistance for their goaltender depth chart.

Adding to the depth of the organization, the Penguins signed Taylor Gauthier to a one-year contract extension Tuesday. It’s a two-way contract worth $850,000 at the NHL level.

Gauthier, 25, is projected to be the second goalie with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins after four seasons with the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL. He is likely to back up either Joel Blomqvist or Sergei Murashov, as those two battle for a spot on the NHL roster.

Gauthier has spent four seasons with the organization and became the Nailers’ all-time winningest goalie, posting a career 71-42-9 record, a 2.26 goals-against average and .923 save percentage with 10 shutouts.

Dubas did not rule out signing another veteran goalie to serve as a third-goalie for the NHL club, but indicated he would likely sign Gauthier and elevate him to the AHL level. 2025 fourth-round pick Gabriel D’Aigle served as a backup to Gauthier late in the regular season and in the ECHL playoffs.

D’Aigle, 19, is the new presumptive starter in Wheeling, or Florida, wherever the Penguins’ ECHL affiliate may reside next season.

In his limited AHL work, Gauthier has a 10-5-7 record in 25 career games with a 2.77 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage with two shutouts. He originally joined the organization in 2022 as an undrafted free agent.
