The Boston Bruins made their first trade of the NHL offseason yesterday.

Andre Gasseau was traded across the country, landing just 331 miles away from his hometown in Orange County, CA. The BC captain scored 111 points in 135 NCAA games and was set to become a free agent in August. There’s also Bruins trade talk, as an insider named two Boston players he heard in conversations, both with a year remaining on their current contract.

Oh, and if you missed it, Patrice Bergeron’s number is getting retired. Another announcement should be coming early next week.

Right-shot defensemen are a need in Boston, but one of the top UFAs is coming off the market. Darren Raddysh is moving from Tampa Bay to another team in the division.

Elsewhere around the league, Mike Babcock’s investigation wrapped up yesterday, and the NHL will not prevent him from becoming a head coach again. Sergei Bobrovsky is looking for term on his next deal, which may force the Panthers to explore other options, and teams are calling Buffalo for one of their defensemen.

The Devils lost an assistant coach, the Red Wings have a backup goalie who is hungry for the job, and the full draft order was released.

The Bruins have eight picks at the draft, which begins one week from today.

Happy Friday, catch up on Bruins and league news in today’s Daily Bean:

Boston Bruins

BERGERON: It should not have come as a surprise (maybe the timing, if you compare it to Chara’s announcement), but the Bruins are retiring Patrice Bergeron’s No. 37. The 20-year Bruin is one of, if not the best, defensive centers to play the game, and he also ranks third in franchise history for total points with 1,040.

He was named to the IIHF Hall of Fame at the beginning of the month, and the Hockey Hall of Fame announces the Class of 2026 on Monday.

GASSEAU: Don Sweeney found a trade partner for BC captain Andre Gasseau, and it’s one from his home state. The pending UFA is going to the San Jose Sharks, and the Bruins will acquire a fifth-round pick and move up 16 spots in the fourth round.

Frankly Hockey (video via YouTube): On Wednesday’s episode of Frankly Hockey, Frank Seravalli called the Bruins “one of the real fascinating teams to talk about this summer.” He mentioned Mason Lohrei and Sean Kuraly as players he heard in trade conversations and said both will appear on his next trade board.

“They’re trying to get a difference-maker,” Seravalli said about the Bruins. “They want to land one of these big dogs that’s out there. I just don’t know how they’re going to do it from an asset perspective. That’s the tougher part to figure out.”

NHL News & National Hockey Now

Toronto Maple Leafs (via 𝕏): Elliotte Friedman reported it early Friday morning, but the Toronto Maple Leafs acquired Darren Raddysh in a sign-and-trade. The Maple Leafs signed the 30-year-old defenseman to an eight-year deal with an $8.5 million cap hit.

Sportsnet: The NHL’s investigation into Mike Babcock’s 2023 resignation from Columbus concluded yesterday. He has the green light to coach. The league released a statement yesterday:

“The League has completed its review of Mike Babcock’s tenure in Columbus, and of certain alleged conduct associated therewith. Our investigation has concluded that, even in a light least favorable to Mr. Babcock, there is no current basis to restrict his employment in the League.”

The NHLPA, which pushed the NHL to investigate, also released a statement:

“While we found the allegations of Mike Babcock’s conduct as the Columbus Blue Jackets’ head coach very concerning, the League has decided that there is no current basis on which to restrict his employment. Moving forward, we expect that Mr. Babcock will uphold the high standards required of NHL head coaches.”

Colorado Hockey Now: 25-year-old Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram is back in trade rumors. Darren Dreger reported that “multiple teams” are calling Buffalo on the defenseman. The left-shot defenseman had 42 points (11-31–42) in a full 82-game season, and he had seven (4-3–7) more in 13 playoff games.

Florida Hockey Now: Sergei Bobrovsky is an unrestricted free agent this summer, and Nick Kypreos suggested that he is still looking for a long-term deal. The 37-year-old goaltender is looking for something around “$42 million over six or seven years.” George Richards has more on Bobrovsky’s contract, as well as goaltender targets if Bobrovsky walks.

Detroit Hockey Now: There is going to be an opening in Detroit’s crease next season, and Michal Postava wants the job. He’s ready for it; it’s why he left Czechia. He played 33 games this season with Grand Rapids (AHL), and he only allowed four goals once. Bob Duff has more on the 24-year-old netminder.

New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils announced that assistant coach Jeremy Colliton will be leaving the team to pursue other business opportunities. He coached their power play for the past two seasons, leading them to a 25.2% conversion rate (fourth-best) over the two years.

NJHN reports that the other opportunities are unrelated to NHL openings.
