A youth hockey camp in Anchorage is getting some help from the NHL this week.
Members of the Seattle Kraken organization are in Alaska working with young athletes at the Anchorage Hockey Academy Summer Camp.
“We look forward to this trip every year,” Seattle Kraken Player Development Coach David Min said.
Min is one of the Kraken staff members spending time on the ice with campers this week.
“This camp is awesome. There’s lots of energy inside the building and everything is great, so we love being here,” Min said.
According to organizers, 144 children are participating in this week’s camp.
The program combines hockey instruction with activities including swimming, soccer, pickleball and frisbee.
Organizer Kirk Kullberg said the camp is focused on more than just developing hockey players.
“Just growing the game in general, that’s what I think it’s all about, right? Giving the kids a spot to become better athletes,” Kullberg said.
Kullberg said the camp also helps keep children active during the summer months.
“Coaches are actually trained to keep the kids off their phones. If they see them on their phones, they take them,” Kullberg said.
The camp serves children from a variety of age groups and provides an opportunity to stay active while continuing to develop hockey skills during the offseason.
Kraken staff members will remain at the camp through the end of the week.
“We love coming here to support hockey and growing the game and continuing to grow Kraken fans,” Min said.
The Anchorage Hockey Academy Summer Camp runs through July 22 at Dempsey Anderson Ice Arena in Anchorage.
