(Photo) Carl Sneep, Warrior hockey defenseman, appears in a Pittsburgh Penguins jersey after being drafted second in the 2nd round of the NHL draft, the highest position of any Brainerd hockey player. Sneep will attend Boston College on a full scholarship this fall and play hockey.

30 years ago (1996)

Brainerd shortstop Jade O’Brien was named outstanding player in the state Lions High School All-Star Tournament. Playing for the North team, O’Brien went 7-for-9 with a homer, three RBIs and three runs scored. O’Brien was awarded a $250 scholarship.

40 years ago (1986)

(Photo) DNR non-game specialist Pam Perry (left) holds a baby loon that Shari Brown, registered nurse at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, picked up on her way to work. It was wandering on Hwy 371, with cars dodging around it. The DNR will try to reunite the baby loon with its parents.

John Hilding Erickson, a 1962 graduate of Washington High School here, graduated with high honors from Harvard University and gave a student commencement address. He will study on a fellowship in Spain this summer, then return to Harvard or Yale on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and a Danforth Fellowship.

80 years ago (1946)

Hotel-style music comes to Breezy Point Lodge in the person of Warney Ruhl and his ten-piece tenor band, direct from the Hotel Washington in Indianapolis. The unique group features seven male vocalists and one girl. They combine in five vocal trios and two quartettes. They are booked for the season.

100 years ago (1926)

The corner of 4th and Kingwood Streets was the scene sometime last night of a collision of an automobile and a mailbox. This morning the mailbox was found torn from its foundation, and parts from a Ford car were found scattered about the area. No one has come forward.

37/46: This truck belonged to Silas Hall’s Transfer Line just after World War I. It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving. The picture was taken in front of the railroad freight office. Before the truck, Silas Hal used teams of horses and wagons which he kept at 415 Main (now Washington Street).
